The multivitamin/mineral supplement I often use as the benchmark is made by USANA Health Sciences. The “Essentials” multivitamin/mineral by USANA scores a 5.0 and also has a gold medal of achievement rating as well.   When you are in their site, just enter the country you are in and you can search their products. They have products for children and adults. If you would like a five minute health assessment by USANA to see what supplements need for good health click here.

Contact us if you are interested in purchasing products from USANA and would like them automatically delivered every 28 days (which comes with a 10% discount).

My general guidleines on supplements:

*Omega 3 Fish Oils should be mercury free or purified and should have a good amount of DHA and EPA
*Vitamin D, should be in the form of D3
*A good calcium supplement should have Calcium citrate or a combination, but calcium carbonate alone does not absorb as well. A calcium supplement should also have a good form of magnesium (anything but plain oxide) and vitamin D3 added.

All the supplements on this site meet my criteria for high quality products.

Nutrition Information and Products

A high quality multivitamin/mineral should be taken more than once a day and should be taken with food, as it will absorb better.

Look for USP and high percentages of RDA

Completeness: full spectrum of vitamin, mineral, and antioxidants

Absorbability: bioavailability, dissolve test (see how long it takes to dissolve your vitamin in a glass of water – it should dissolve in a couple of hours or less), look for reputable brand, look for USP symbol

Potency: high enough doses, RDA requirements are the minimal requirements to prevent deficiency disease plus a little extra, this is not the same as optimal amounts.  Look for high percentages of RDA on the label

Purity: Pharmaceutical grade, can ask your provider to look in the Physician Desk Reference, USP symbol (United States Pharmacopeia), can call 800# and ask to see their certificate of inspection

Safety: Should not have any iron (unless you have been told you need to supplement with iron, you don’t need to, and too much can be toxic)  At least a portion of the Vitamin A should be listed as something else (usually as beta carotene, which is a precusor to Vitamin A)

Comparative Guide to Nutritional Supplements by Lyle MacWilliam (4th Edition) has been used as a resource in determining which quality products to provide to you on this site. This large independent study looks at more than the USP (United States Pharmacopeia) standards. The study assesses the completeness based on optimal health. It looks at the potency and forms of the individual ingredients. Most importantly the study looks at how bioavailable the ingredients are, meaning how well your cells can absorb, utilize and efficiently excrete what you don’t need at the time. Our cellular nutritional needs vary day to day, sometimes even hour to hour, depending on what we are eating and what is going on at the time.

A high quality multivitamin/mineral should have adequate amounts of the right bioavailable ingredients so your cells are provided with optimal nutrition. The Compariative Guide is an independent study that evaluated and scored 1500 supplements (multivitamins abnd minerals) on a 0-5 scale, like a hotel rating, with a score of 5 being the best.

I have researched a number of other companies, several of which only supply their products to health care providers. As a heath care provider with an interest in nutritional medicine, I have chosen several quality products to share with you on this site. The multivitamin/mineral on this site have achieved a rating of at least 3.5. If a rating was not available (meaning it was not part of this study), I personally reviewed the ingredients in the supplement and in my opinion feel it is a quality product.
